On June 20, 2023, Director Gaby L. Longsworth, Ph.D., will moderate the program “Journey to Juneteenth,” presented by Timothy Wright of Attucks Adams and hosted by the Black IP Professionals Resource Group of the Intellectual Property Owners Association.
Program Overview
Journey to Juneteenth chronicles the four years between the first emancipation of enslaved peoples –here in Washington, DC– to the breaking of the final vestiges of Confederate control in Texas. When Union troops reached Gavelston, Texas in June 1865, the enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation was fulfilled. That day became a celebration and is known as Juneteeth. The end of slavery in the United States marked a second independence; a “new birth of freedom” for four million formerly enslaved people across the nation. This program will link the emancipation to Juneteenth by way of the United States Colored Troops and stories from DC that helped shape the entire nation. The presentation will allow for audience Q&A and discussion.
