Director Monica Riva Talley was quoted in the article “Cannabis Retailers Have Their Work Cut Out for Them in Terms of Trademark and Brand Strategy,” published by World Trademark Review. She comments on the current state of trademark protection for ancillary cannabis goods and services and the future of trademark protection as momentum for federal legalization of cannabis increases. World Trademark Review writes:
“The North American cannabis market – while still in its early days – has changed a lot in the past few years. Canada legalised recreational use of the drug in 2018 and to date 16 states have fully legalised marijuana use (a total of 36 allow it for medical purposes). The shifting legal and regulatory framework has had an impact on business’s trademark strategies in both countries, with brand owners having to act quickly and be forward-thinking to ensure their rights are protected.”
