“Daniel Block, director at Sterne Kessler in Washington DC, says that he generally tries to refer work to lawyers that he likes and has a good relationship with, even when he got to know their work through being on opposite sides of the table.

He says he primarily considers whether they did a good job in the matter and whether they’d be a good fit for a client.

‘It could be really bad for me if I referred a matter and the client got upset because they thought it was a bad referral. So that’s why I try to pick who would be the best counsel out of the folks that I know,’ he says.”
