Overview
Karen Wong-Chan is a registered patent agent in Sterne Kessler’s Electronics Practice Group. Karen prepares and prosecutes patent applications at the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) as well as foreign patent offices. Areas in which Karen has prosecution experience include telecommunications, wireless communications, multimedia data processing, video graphic processors, and touchscreen electronics. She has also been involved in inter partes review proceedings at the Patent Trial and Appeal Board in the area of telecommunications. Karen is versed in the art of patent searching as well as invalidity analysis.
Karen has over ten years of research and engineering experience at Bell Communications Research. She has worked in telecommunications, wireless technologies, and operations, and authored technical specifications for wireline and wireless network communications systems. These included network management and maintenance operations requirements to ensure quality of service, network and operations plans for emerging wireless communications services, and operations plans for implementing Personal Communications Services (PCS).
Karen also authored plans for network surveillance and testing involving Advanced Intelligent Network (AIN), ISDN, & Common Channel Signaling. Additionally, she worked with Regional Bell Operating Company (RBOC) subject matter experts to develop generic operations requirements for wireless radio equipment in support of PCS/cellular and Wireless Local Loop. Further, Karen led teams to develop generic operations requirements for network interconnection for Exchange Access (XA) Switched Multi-megabit Data Service (SMDS) that contributed to industry standards.
Based on her own experience, Karen is a frequent speaker and writer on the topic of restarting your career after a break. She received her M.Eng. from Cornell University and her B.S., with honors, in electrical engineering from the University of Florida.
