Overview
Matthew P. Metzger is an associate in Sterne Kessler’s Mechanical & Design Practice Group. His practice focuses on strategic counseling, portfolio management, and preparation and prosecution of U.S. and foreign patent applications. Matt has trial experience in federal court, serving as second chair in a federal trial. He works with a broad range of clients, ranging from Fortune 100 companies to start-ups.

Matt’s primary areas of technical experience encompass an array of technologies, including: mechanical systems, electrical systems, electro-mechanical systems, electrical control systems, energy generation systems, electro-pneumatic systems, electro-hydraulic systems, cloud software systems, wireless communication systems, medical devices, agricultural equipment, and transmission assemblies, both in U.S. and international jurisdictions. Matt’s experience also includes a variety of consumer products, including footwear, sports equipment, apparel, bottles, wearables, and musical equipment and accessories.
Matt developed his technical expertise through academic training and hands-on laboratory experience in nuclear engineering. He advanced his expertise while engineering maintenance requirement for nuclear submarines. While working for the Department of Defense, Matt was selected for the NAVSEA Next Generation Leadership Development Program, a prestigious opportunity that led him through Harvard Business courses and mentorships by Admirals and a cadre of senior executives.
Prior to joining Sterne Kessler, Matt was a patent associate at an AM Law 100 law firm, where he focused on patent portfolio development and management, as well as litigation. Matt earned his juris doctor, summa cum laude, from Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law with a graduate certificate in appellate advocacy. He served as a judicial extern for Indiana Supreme Court Chief Justice Loretta Rush in 2019, and obtained the esteemed Professor Dr. Leonidas N. Georgakopoulos Fellowship. Matt was the president of the Business Law Association and a quarter finalist in the Robert H. Staton Moot Court Competition. He also contributed as an associate editor of the Indiana Law Review.
