Overview
Mike D. Webb is an associate in Sterne Kessler’s Mechanical & Design Practice Group. His practice includes preparation and prosecution of utility patents, both domestic and foreign. Mike’s work includes all stages of patent prosecution, from initial application preparation to final issuance of the patent. He has also worked on several post-grant proceedings, including inter partes reviews and ex parte reexams, as well as conducting freedom to operate analysis, preparing product clearance opinions, and providing validity and infringement opinions. He has experience across multiple industries including, aerospace power systems, consumer products and processes, food and beverage devices, medical devices, semi-conductors, and automotive components and systems.
Prior to joining Sterne Kessler, Mike was an engineer at Rolls-Royce, where he gained technical expertise across multiple areas of the gas turbine engine. Mike initially specialized as a turbine design engineer, integrating manufacturing, stress, and heat transfer disciplines to deliver industry-leading technology to several components across the Rolls-Royce engine portfolio. He gained extensive knowledge of design engineering practices, finite element stress analysis, and manufacturing techniques, as well as being named as an inventor on multiple patents. Mike used his design expertise in his role as a Product Development Manager to deliver a sub-system of components to a new civil-large engine. In this role, he led a team of engineers through concept development and design reviews, to engine testing, and finally through engine certification. Mike successfully managed technical risk and supply chain deliveries, with project cost and schedule. Finally, Mike spent two years as Chief of Technology for structures and transmission components. In this role, he developed the technology strategy for these components through launching new research work packages and managing the patent portfolio. Mike further encouraged innovation among his engineering teams through implementing new tools, conducting patent workshops, and providing patent and innovation training.
Mike received his J.D., summa cum laude, from Indiana University, Robert H. McKinney School of Law with a certificate in Intellectual Property. During law school, he worked as a research assistant to support the launch of the Intellectual Property Clinic that now helps community inventors and startup companies obtain patent and trademark protection. Mike received his Masters in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Bristol, England. He is also a Chartered Engineer with the Institute of Mechanical Engineers.
