Overview

Rola R. Aylo, Ph.D. is an associate in Sterne Kessler’s Electronics Practice Group, where she assists in the preparation and prosecution of U.S. and foreign patent applications and assists with patentability and validity analyses. Her areas of technical expertise include electro-optic devices, antenna devices, communication systems, optical and lighting systems, automotive technologies, plasma monitoring systems, and renewable energy systems, including battery management systems, and energy storage devices.

Prior to joining Sterne Kessler, Rola was a patent agent at a full service IP firm in the D.C. area where she drafted applications and claims while anticipating complex legal issues, such as 35 U.S.C. §101 challenges.

Rola has also worked as a research associate at the University of Dayton, where her research focused on two-dimensional and three-dimensional imaging systems using digital holography as part of Phase I and Phase II Army sponsored SBIR projects. She also worked in the areas of optical design, sensors using metamaterials, and nanoparticle dispersed liquid crystal cell fabrication and characterization for super-resolution imaging.

Rola received her Ph.D. from the University of Dayton. Her doctoral research focused on wave propagation in metamaterials. Novel negative index materials in the visible range based on nanoparticle dispersed liquid crystal cells were developed. The extended Maxwell Garnett theory, which is a combination of the regular Maxwell Garnett and Mie scattering theories, was used to find the effective refractive index of the proposed cell. She received her J.D., summa cum laude, from The Catholic University of America Columbus School of Law, where she was awarded the John L. Garvey Faculty Award (Evening Division) and earned a certificate for completing a specialized law and technology program.

She is a co-author of a book: Analog and Digital Holography with MATLAB, SPIE Press, 2015.
