Associate, Admitted only in Texas; Supervised by D.C. Bar member Ian Soule

Carson S. Smith is an associate in Sterne Kessler’s Mechanical & Design Practice Group. His practice focuses on preparing and prosecuting utility patents in the U.S. and abroad; and Carson frequently works with stakeholders in the automotive, consumer-good, and medical-device industries to develop valuable and robust patent portfolios. Carson also has experience in conducting due diligence on patent portfolios and providing opinion-work related thereto.

Carson received his J.D., cum laude, from Texas A&M University School of Law with a concentration in Intellectual Property Law. During law school, Carson focused on studying patent prosecution and litigation strategies via hands-on experiences, which comprised externships at a patent-law boutique, pro bono work for the school’s patent clinic, and a position as the Intellectual Property Editor for the Texas A&M Journal of Property Law.

Prior to attending Texas A&M, Carson received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, cum laude, from Virginia Tech. While there, Carson interned for the school’s FAA-designated UAS test site, gaining experience in technology areas that are traditionally outside the scope of mechanical engineering, such as electronics, communications, and software programming.

Outside of the firm, Carson enjoys spending time on the golf course and discovering new music.
